Do you ever feel like your body is holding onto tension or that something just isn’t quite right? You’re not alone. Many of us experience discomfort, whether it’s chronic pain, the lingering effects of an injury, or simply the stress of daily life.

This is where the expertise of Tori Cuthbert at Be You Health Studios in Peterborough can make a real difference.

Who is Tori Cuthbert?

With a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science from St Mary’s University, Tori brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her practice. She’s passionate about helping individuals move with confidence, feel stronger, and leave discomfort behind.

Her specialisms include:

Injury rehabilitation: Guiding you back to full function after an injury or surgery.

Running biomechanics: Analysing your running style to improve efficiency and prevent injuries.

Managing conditions: Providing effective strategies for conditions like back pain and sciatica.

Beyond these specialisations, Tori is a qualified:

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

MLD, specifically the Dr Vodder method, is a gentle, hands-on technique that encourages the natural flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in:

Immune function: Supporting the body’s defence mechanisms.

Detoxification: Removing waste products and toxins from tissues.

Reducing swelling and inflammation: Addressing conditions like lymphedema and post-surgical swelling.

Benefits of MLD:

Reduced stress and anxiety: Promotes relaxation and a sense of calm.

Pain relief: Eases muscle tension and discomfort.

Improved recovery: Speeds up healing after surgery or injury.

Enhanced skin health: Improves skin tone and texture.

Why Choose Tori for Your MLD Therapy?

The Dr Vodder method requires specialised training to ensure proper application. Tori is a highly qualified MLD therapist at Be You Health Studios, offering:

Tailored treatments: Customised to your specific needs and goals.

Expert techniques: Utilising both the Dr Vodder and FG-MLD methods.

A focus on your overall well-being: Addressing your unique health concerns and supporting your recovery journey.

Exercise is not necessarily for everyone.

Maybe you were not encouraged to exercise as a child, or, more likely, you had such a poor experience of sport at school that you vowed never to try again! Maybe you had been involved in an accident that prevented you from participating in activity for such a long time you simply lost the habit.

You’re not alone. Thousands of people have avoided exercise for decades during their lives. It could be down to laziness, injury, lack of time, or lack of confidence – not exercising is a common problem that seems to expand the longer it goes on.

The trouble is when you’re younger, and fitter, the lack of exercise does not seem to be that much of an issue, particularly if you are lucky enough not to put on weight. However, as you get older, your body goes through a number of changes that might lead to muscle loss and weight gain, as well as an increased risk of a number of other physiological changes that might put your overall health at risk.

These include a risk of osteoporosis, gallstones, and hypertension. Inadequate exercise can also lead to an increase in the risk of colon cancer – your digestion slows down, and waste is sat in your system for longer than it should. Physical activity is also a great regulator of hormones. If your hormones are out of balance, you are at greater risk of breast cancer.

How to start exercising after a long time

Please rest assured it is never too late to start exercising, no matter how many years you have led a sedentary life.

First and foremost, replace the word ‘exercise’ with ‘movement’. There is a marked difference between the two. ‘Exercise’ can have negative connotations that put you off before you even start. However, movement is a far gentler, more achievable approach that doesn’t evoke an image of running hell for leather on a treadmill and collapsing in a sweaty mound.

Integrating more movement back into your life is the one thing you can do simply, easily, and inexpensively. If you are looking to increase exercise after injury, then that movement might simply be a case of walking to the end of the drive and back, then to the end of the road, then around the block, in a time frame that is not pressured but does keep encouraging you to make tiny steps of progress day by day.

The important thing to remember here is the compounding nature of progress. From one day to the next, you might not feel as though you are moving forward. However, a tiny bit of effort, day by day, will soon add up week by week, and before you know it, you could be doing laps of the park.

What happens when you start exercising after a long time?

The impact on your physiology when you start to move more is almost immediate.

Your blood pressure lowers, which lowers your resting heart rate and decreases cholesterol levels, thereby reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Your muscles ache – this is a good thing! Exercising causes tiny tears in the muscle fibres and connective tissues, which then help the muscle to build back stronger. Learn to embrace the ache (but if it’s a real pain, be careful and seek professional help).

The flow of blood to the brain increases, raising mental clarity.

You feel more energetic

Manage your own expectations

Make sure that you don’t put too much pressure on yourself; otherwise, you might risk abandoning all your well-intentioned plans. Think realistically about what you can do and achieve. Starting to move after a long period of inactivity will trigger changes and improvements, but there are three things you must remember:

Those changes will take time and effort to achieve. Consistency is going to be your best friend. And the great thing about consistency is that it is the very foundation of building habits.

Look back as well as look forward. After a week, look back at what you’ve achieved over that week and be proud of yourself. After a month, look back at what you’ve achieved over that month, and be proud of yourself. Always give yourself credit.

If you slip up, forget, avoid an opportunity to ‘move’, and don’t beat yourself up. See it as a simple ‘blip’ and get right back on the wagon. That way, you don’t over-catastrophise the slip-up into a complete failure and simply slip back into good habits again.

If you need support getting back to some degree of movement, maybe you’re looking to start to exercise again after injury, or simply don’t know where to start, then at Be You Health Studios, we have the knowledge and resources to help. Our discrete and private facilities mean that you don’t have to face hordes of fit, Lycra-clad gym aficionados, and you can start moving again in an exclusive environment with like-minded people. If you’d like to know more about Be You, you are very welcome to come a see our facilities. Simply drop us a line telling us a bit about yourself, and we’ll look forward to welcoming you to our Lincoln Road studios.

The new year is fast approaching, which can only mean one thing; it’s almost time to jump back into a fitness routine. While many of us choose to begin in the new year, the safest and most effective method of forming a movement programme is to start small and work our way up. Therefore, instead of waiting for January 1st to roll around, the best time to ease yourself into regular movement is now. If you’re feeling anxious about starting, remember that gentle exercise and movement can help alleviate stress and anxiety symptoms.

One of the most common new year’s resolutions is to get moving regularly. Despite this, it’s a resolution that so seldom lasts for the entirety of the year. This is often because we throw ourselves into an intense workout routine that’s impossible to maintain over an extended period. As a result, getting moving before the new year rolls around might just be the key to success. If you’re wondering when to start, consider the “Back to School” period as an ideal time to get into a new health and exercise routine.

There’s no denying that starting a movement routine can be incredibly intimidating; however, it’s one of the best things we can do for our health. Movement can help us maintain a healthy weight, improve our coordination and balance, reduce our risk of chronic disease, improve our sleep habits, and even boost our self-esteem.

What’s more, it’s never too late to start a fitness routine, even though some of us deem ourselves “too old” upon reaching a certain point in our lives. While you may not be able to jump on a treadmill and run for 5 kilometres at the age of 80, there are manageable exercises that can be incorporated into your daily routine. If you’re worried about your age, remember that it’s never too late to start moving, even if you haven’t exercised for over 20 years.

With this being said, just how do we go about starting to build up for the new year?

Start with an individual fitness assessment.

Most of us have an idea of how fit we are; however, a proper assessment provides us with a foundation to work from. After all, moving forwards in a fitness programme is all about progress. To assess our body composition, flexibility, and muscular and aerobic fitness, we should consider the following:

Our body mass index (BMI)

Our waist circumference

How far we can reach forward while sitting on the floor with our legs in front of us

How many push-ups we can do at a time

How long it takes us to walk a mile

Our pulse rate immediately after walking a mile

Designing a movement programme.

Once we’re familiar with our body’s capabilities, we can then go on to design a movement programme. In doing so, we must consider our fitness goals; from managing a physical condition to losing weight, we all have our own personal drive to get fit. Upon establishing our end goal, we can then go on to create a balanced routine. As a rule of thumb, we should be getting a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly. In addition to aerobic activity, you should also perform strength exercises at least twice weekly.

Starting low and progressing slowly is key, especially for those with medical conditions or injuries. In fact, a movement coach may be required to ensure that safe practice is carried out. A movement coach will be able to design a programme that gradually improves endurance, strength, and movement range.

One thing that stands in the way of us successfully incorporating movement into our daily routines is boredom. To combat this boredom, we should work to integrate different activities daily. Moreover, alternating between various activities means we’re able to work out different parts of our bodies, reducing the likelihood of over-exertion and injury.

As previously mentioned, we’re often unsuccessful in maintaining a movement routine, as we tend to throw ourselves into the deep end. By working out too intensely for too long, we put ourselves at risk of injury and muscle soreness. Therefore, it’s important not to exceed our limits and allow time between movement sessions for recovery and rest.

Getting started.

First things first, warm-ups and cool-downs are essential to our physical well-being. Avoiding injury means we need to ease our way into activity, as well as ease ourselves out of it. With every movement session, our stamina improves, meaning we’ll be able to increase the length of time we exercise each time.

A singular 30-minute movement session can seem overwhelming in the early stages of a movement programme. As a result, breaking the large singular session into multiple smaller ones is the ideal way of managing such.

Listening to our bodies is the most important thing regarding movement. It can be very tempting to ignore feelings of nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, or pain. While the adage of “no pain, no gain” is often drilled into us, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, we should be feeling slight discomfort as we’re pushing our bodies to their physical limits. Despite this, we shouldn’t be exerting ourselves beyond these limits; this is how we end up with injuries.

Following on from listening to our bodies, we need to learn to be flexible with ourselves. We’re not going to feel our best every day, and a day off or two isn’t going to hurt our progress.

Monitoring progress with Be You Health Studios.

Last but not least, we need to monitor our progress to understand just how much we’ve improved. Despite this, knowing what to measure isn’t always so obvious. That’s where Be You comes in. Not only does Be You craft bespoke movement plans, but we also help our clients measure their progress. Contact Be You, ready to move your way into the new year.

In this blog we will look at MLD treatment, what it is, what it can aid with, who will find MLD beneficial and where you can receive MLD treatment.

What is MLD?

MLD stands for manual lymphatic drainage and is a form of gentle massage that helps to stimulate the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that helps to process and remove waste and toxins from the body. It also plays an important role in the immune system.

What Can MLD Treatment Help?

Primarily MLD is designed to control the main symptoms of Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. However, the range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques can help with other health concerns.

As we age, the lymphatic system can become less efficient. This deterioration can lead to the development of health problems, including:

Swelling (oedema) in the arms, legs, and feet

Fatigue

Difficulty sleeping

Pain

Digestive problems

Skin problems

Weakened immune system

Cosmetic surgery recovery

MLD is especially beneficial for people over the age of 50, as it can help to offset the effects of ageing on the lymphatic system and has also been documented to help:

Improve circulation

Boost the immune system

Reduce stress

Promote relaxation

Improve overall well-being

MLD also has a track record of helping in other situations, from aiding in the recovery process after surgery, as part of a detox programme, accelerating sports rehab, pre and post-pregnancy and aiding in managing lymphoedema and arthritis.

Where Can I Get MLD Treatment?

If you want to try MLD, talk to your doctor or a qualified practitioner, such as Tori Cuthbert at Be You Health Studio in Peterborough. It is vital that you obtain your MLD treatment from a therapist with the right qualifications for the treatment you require.

Tori is our qualified manual lymphatic drainage therapist practising the Dr Vodder method – a gentle, non-invasive technique that gently restores the lymphatic system. Tori is also qualified in Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Drainage (FG-MLD) also known as the ‘Fill and Flush’ method.

If you are considering MLD, book a consultation with Tori, and together you can discuss your needs and find the right treatment for you.

Anytime from November onwards, our TV screens are filled with tempting images of delicious Christmas fayre laid out on groaning tables. From glistening turkeys to sumptuous puddings, our collective tastebuds are assaulted on every level!

Of course, that doesn’t mean that you are obliged to eat as though every day were Christmas Day. Despite this, if you are someone who is trying to shift a few pounds, then this constant assault makes the struggle harder.

If you allow it to.

Recognising the self-sabotaging mindset

That’s the thing about getting fit and healthy – it is all a mindset, and believe it or not, you can choose to allow yourself to be affected. Or you can choose to ignore the noise around you and simply concentrate on your own goals.

Whether it is Christmas, birthdays, high days and holidays, or simply days with a ‘d’ in them, there will always be a reason or excuse not to put that effort in and work towards making the changes towards a healthier lifestyle.

How many times have you told yourself that you’ll start again on a Monday – that you may as well enjoy the next few days and eat every bad thing you can possibly get your hands on because you won’t be able to next week?! That prevailing sense of procrastination derails every good intention and only serves to make the whole process even more difficult in the long run.

The problem is there is always going to be an excuse, a party, a meal out, a birthday – an excuse to completely stop putting in any effort at all and kick the can further down the street.

Welcome life into your life

Guess what – life happens, and it is there to be lived. If losing weight and concentrating on getting fit and healthy means that you have to opt-out of life and stop enjoying yourself, then what incentive do you have to push through the hard times? What kind of miserable existence are you setting yourself up for if you deny yourself going out with friends on a Friday night or enjoying Sunday lunch with your family?

Take Christmas – this should be a time for relaxing with your loved ones and catching up with relatives you may only ever see once a year. You can choose to approach Christmas in one of two ways:

EITHER, you resent the temptations on offer, spend the whole time fretting that every mouthful you put into your body is being redirected straight to your waistline, spend every moment feeling equally guilty, then dismiss it with a ‘F@$%K IT’ mentality, only for the guilt to immediately seep back through.

OR you can enjoy the time that you have, make sensible, healthy choices for yourself, and stop spiralling into negative self-loathing, which will only undermine all future attempts to shed weight and get fit.

Shift your mindset to thinking more powerfully

When you are constantly looking to hang your lack of progression or consistency on the influence of external events, then you have what psychologists term an ‘external locus of control’. What this means is that you consider events or influences that happen outside of you to have power and control over your actions. This can be incredibly disempowering when you are trying to make big changes.

For example, if you say to yourself that you cannot possibly contemplate getting fit and healthy in the run-up to Christmas simply because there is so much temptation everywhere, then this is a very ‘external’ way of thinking because you are blaming Christmas for your inability to make healthier decisions for yourself.

The good news is that it is quite simple to shift your way of thinking from external to internal, which is a much more powerful way of thinking.

Instead, acknowledge that temptation is all around, but that by not listening to the ‘noise’ and simply focusing on making a healthier choice for yourself, you can maintain a positive path towards a healthier lifestyle.

As human beings, we are primed to follow the path of least resistance. Often putting the onus on a third party, such as Christmas, gives us the excuse that we need not devolve ourselves of any responsibility. Unfortunately, there is no easy shortcut, and effort needs to be made whatever the circumstances. Any external ‘googlies’ are simply an indication that a little more effort needs to be exerted during those times.

So, when it comes to eating and drinking at Christmas, a better approach is to acknowledge the additional temptations that this time of year can bring and approach them with the mindset that whether you succumb or not, it is because you have made a conscious decision, rather than being at the mercy of external forces. From this, you are building up a great internal sense of power and control over your decisions, which will lead to a much longer-term source of strength as you follow your journey back to health and fitness. If you would like to understand more about how Be You can support you in this journey, contact movement coach Ben Cuthbert for a one-on-one chat.
